5 Practical Sales Coaching Ideas for Busy Managers

Sales trainer coaching a team of professionals during a workshop.

‘Oh, they’re just good at sales.’ We’ve heard this statement so many times when people encounter a successful sales professional. Admittedly, some people naturally have the skills suited for sales; however, many successful sales professionals are trained. The right training helps these professionals develop the right skills, mindset, and habits to not only be successful but also sustain the success in the long term.

Below, we explore sales coaching and how you can implement it for your sales team’s success.

What is Sales Coaching

Put simply, the term refers to the support, training, tools, and resources that sales managers provide their sales teams. This is done with the primary goal of improving skills within the team and hitting sales targets.

You can opt to coach your own team or have a consultant come in. The sales trainer works directly with the team to identify gaps and help the team tackle common challenges. They can help with issues such as developing the right mindset for selling, improving organization, and how to handle calls or approach customers at different stages. They also work with individuals in the team to address specific issues and identify areas of improvement.

Benefits of Sales Training and Coaching

Sales have evolved over the years. It’s no longer just a numbers game. Sales professionals today have to develop the right skills and have the right mindset for better results. This is where coaching comes in. Coaching provides:

  • A personalized approach to acquiring skills. Sales reps are provided with one-on-one support to address specific challenges
  • Improved retention rates, as your team will see that you have their best interests at heart.
  • Increased opportunities for collaboration as your team’s goals and approaches become more aligned.

Sales Coaching Techniques for Busy Managers

Your plate is probably already full as a sales manager. Adding being a sales mentor on top of everything else may seem overwhelming and even burdensome, especially since coaching is often a long-term strategy.

The good news is that there are strategies you can apply in order to begin seeing improvements in your team’s performance in the short term.

  1. Focus on your team’s wellbeing

It’s not uncommon for sales professionals to experience burnout. Your team’s mental health has a big impact on their performance. It goes without saying that their well-being ought to be one of your top priorities.

Some ways you can prioritize your team’s well-being include setting boundaries with work hours and schedules, and checking in on individuals through one-on-one meetings.

  1. Review calls

Recording calls and reviewing them later is a great way to help sales professionals improve. You can identify ways to help improve their conversations by pinpointing strengths and weaknesses. You can also identify opportunities, such as market trends and gaps.

  1. Provide opportunities for self-evaluation

Self-evaluation is critical. It gives individuals the opportunity to introspect and identify areas they can work on. They can take a step back and determine how they can improve.

This self-awareness is important for building self-confidence, which will in turn lead to greater consistency in performance.

  1. Encourage autonomy in goal setting

People are more motivated to reach goals that they have set out for themselves. With increased self-awareness, individuals are better able to determine what areas they need to focus on and suggest goals that are personal.

Personal goals give individuals a stronger desire to improve. Sales team members are more likely to commit to and achieve goals when they have set them for themselves. You should also encourage them to create an action plan to achieve these goals.

  1. Provide opportunities for professional development

Studies have shown that professionals who are provided with opportunities to learn have a greater sense of connection to their organization.

Provide your team with opportunities to grow and learn, such as book clubs, courses, and training sessions. This will improve their productivity and engagement at work.
