What Is Sales Management?

What is Sales Management?

A team could have the most talented players in the league and never win a title. This is true even for sales teams. You could have the best talent in the market and still fail to meet goals as an organization. This is why sales management is needed.

If you’re looking to achieve great results as well as to attract and maintain the best talent, it’s important to have a cohesive and collaborative team. In sports, you’ll hear coaches reference ‘a healthy locker room,’ which refers to teammates who help and care for each other. The coach and team leaders foster that healthy environment. The same is true with sales and sales management.

The Role of Sales Management in Building a High-Performing Team

Creating a dream team doesn’t happen by accident. You have to attract the right talent and find ways to nurture, motivate, and retain talent. This is the responsibility of sales management – the process through which managers organize, lead, and motivate teams to exceed performance goals. It includes hiring the best talent, educating for success, , encouraging a healthy sales environment as well as creating and implementing effective strategies.

What Does the Sales Management Process Involve?

Specific processes differ depending on the needs and requirements of the organization. However, any effective process will involve:

  • Talent acquisition
  • Training and coaching
  • Setting realistic stretch goals
  • Developing and communicating strategies
  • Real-time problem solving with individuals and teams
  • Recording and celebrating a win

The success requires managers to focus on key elements.

People

The most important asset. Each salesperson has different strengths and weaknesses. Sales coaching has to be adapted to the needs of each individual and the unique challenges of each territory.

Planning

Setting aggressive and realistic objectives is of primary importance. Targets that are too easy won’t stretch salespeople to hone their craft. Unrealistic targets lead to discouragement, unhealthy team dynamics, and, ultimately, turnover.

Good sales management means understanding the market and overall sales environment so that proper targets can be set. It also helps to foresee what kinds of help are needed and who is most likely to need that assistance. ,

Process

It is important for teams to define their sales process. Using a proven sales framework like The Five Abilities® aids in defining sales processes.

The specific steps in the sales process must address the needs and desires of customer influencers and decision-makers—the business and personal reasons they will choose you. The Five Abilities® serves as the foundation from which good sales processes are built.

Performance/goals

Good objectives and even tactics must be measured. If industry data shows that five sales calls on decision-makers are needed to close, your CRM tool should record the completion of those sales calls and their outcomes. If a certain number of website visits turns a suspect into a prospect, that should also be captured.

Conclusion

Understanding what is involved in the successful management of sales teams is vital for the overall success of the organization.
